Bunion Treatment
We work together to develop an individualized care plan based on your unique needs and the severity of your condition. Your physician will outline your options and help you decide which treatment is best for you.
Nonsurgical Treatments
Typically, we try nonsurgical treatment options first, including:
- Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)—to alleviate pain and swelling.
- Cortisone injections—to reduce inflammation and pain.
- Ice—to reduce swelling.
- Pads or tape—to cushion the area near the bunion.
- Properly fitting shoes—with a wide-toe box and a low, flat heel.
- Shoe orthotics or inserts—to support and cushion your foot.
Surgical Treatments
If symptoms don’t improve with conservative treatment options or your condition is painful, your doctor may recommend surgery.
Surgical treatment includes:
- Osteotomy—to realign the joint.
- Arthrodesis—to fuse the big toe joint.
- Exostectomy—to remove the bump on the toe joint.
