Diagnosis

Along with a physical exam and medical history, we may use one or more tests to diagnose knee tendonitis or bursitis, including:

• Aspiration—to remove fluid from around the knee.
• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—to examine the structures inside your knee.
• Ultrasonography—to create detailed pictures of your knee.
• X-rays—of the knee.

We focus on noninvasive treatments for knee tendonitis and bursitis. The first step is pausing activities that aggravate the knee. In many cases, the R-I-C-E (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) method can relieve symptoms.

If you need additional care, treatment options may include:

• Antibiotics—for bursitis caused by infection.
• Anti-inflammatory medications—to reduce inflammation.
• Cortisone injections—to relieve inflammation.
• Surgery—for severe cases or to drain an inflamed bursa.
